Programme
Our paths. Our meeting point.
DROMA means “paths” in Romani.
For centuries the Romani people have set out on paths that crossed territories, borders and generations. Some were chosen. Many others were imposed. Some took us far away; others brought us back. And within that shared history, every Romani person has walked — and still walks — their own path.
Paths of creation and knowledge. Of memory and resistance. Of searching, struggle, discovery and transformation.
DROMA is born as a place to meet one another on those paths.
An audiovisual space by CHANIPEN, developed with the support of the Intercultural Diversity & Inclusion Center (ILO), where you can get to know the trajectories of Romani people who research, write, create, film, think, remember and transform. A place to discover not only what they do, but also the path that brought them there: the stories that go with them, the questions that move them and what they want to leave to those who come after.
Because we share a history, but there is no single Romani path. We are a people of many paths, and DROMA is where we meet.
From #MeetOurHistory to DROMA
DROMA continues the path opened by #MeetOurHistory, CHANIPEN's initiative devoted to recovering, producing and sharing knowledge about the history and the experiences of the Romani people.
Its book launches already brought us together with Romani authors and other Romani voices to talk about their works, their research and their trajectories. DROMA takes up that experience and opens a new stage: a regular audiovisual programme where those conversations become the starting point for continuing to travel through our history, our present and the questions running through our communities.
A new meeting every month
Every month DROMA brings together two complementary formats.
On one side, a new DROMA episode: a conversation with a guest to learn about their trajectory, their work and the stories, ideas and experiences that have shaped their path.
On the other, a new “Did you know?”, an audiovisual piece that goes deeper into one topic and brings Romani history, research and knowledge to the public in a rigorous, visual and accessible way.
Each “Did you know?” is produced in three versions — Spanish, English and Romanian — and every DROMA episode is subtitled in all three languages, so that the conversations, stories and knowledge reach audiences in different countries.
Knowledge in our own voices
For too long, Romani people have appeared in books, research, the media and institutions as subjects others speak about. DROMA wants to help change that starting point.
Here we meet Romani people as authors, researchers, artists, filmmakers, thinkers and producers of knowledge. People with different journeys who speak from their own experiences, work and perspectives.
We are not trying to tell a single history of the Romani people. We want to meet the many paths that make it up.
CHANIPEN × ILO
DROMA is a project by CHANIPEN: Research, Memory and Justice, developed with the support of the Intercultural Diversity & Inclusion Center (ILO).
This collaboration makes possible a new stage of audiovisual production and multilingual outreach, connecting Romani research, memory, culture and creation with audiences in different countries.
